Why do students dislike mathematics?
The word maths makes many students hatred or fear the reason behind this dislike are many, each student have a different opinion to dislike maths.
After being a maths teacher for 1 year, I have seen many students in the class who are not all interested in maths and the attitude they show towards maths.when i enter to the class the students show an unpleasant expression which discourages me to teach and enquired them why they don't like mathematics student responded them as because their previous teacher was very strict and that teacher use to punish them if they don't do the assignment or don't remember the formula related to the concept teaching and also that teacher only do so many problems on the board without explaining the concepts properly.
Most of the students only learn math only to pass the exams and not for higher studies and they believe that maths can be studied only by the genius students.we can solve this problem by making an interesting lesson plan with more activity to understand the concepts, Since maths is a subject which is essential for our daily life, every day we apply some or the other concepts related to maths so that we should encourage students to learn maths.
Students problems related to mathematics are the following
- Most of the students like maths during their lower classes because its just playing with numbers and counting but then when they go to higher classes they are not able to remember maths formulas and rules.
- Students take more time to understand the concepts and they are not able to find the logic to solve the problem.
- Students are introduced a topic by doing the problems directly on the board without giving any introduction or history to the topic this makes them loose concentration to the subject.
- Students are learning the concepts only through lecture method without any proper demonstration.
- Students often get confused with the notations or symbols used in the concept and they not have much confident to choose which theorem to use while solving the problems.
- Students find difficulties to solve application problems related to the math topics especially in word problems the students find difficult to write the statement into equations.
- Nature of mathematics is sequential in nature the concept, knowledge and skills we learned in the previous classes are needed for another topics because of this the students who don't have prior knowledge of the topic might find difficult to understand new topics.
- Students who are unable to understand the topic they go for tuition and they get more confused.
- Students gets discouraged when they get low marks because its easy to loose marks in maths if they get a right answer they will get marks and if they they do silly mistakes also they might loose marks and because of this students get disappointment and give up the subjects telling that maths is very hard to score.
How to solve this problem?
- Teacher should make sure that the students learn the topic by experience and demonstration so appropriate teaching materials should be made to teach the math topics.
- Teacher should make sure that the students prior knowledge should be known while in the class help them to recall topics ,formulas, theorems related to teach new concepts.
- Make the students understand by giving clear instructions and teach them step by step to solve problems
- Play some memory game so that students recall formulas and concepts related to the topic
- There should be continuity in teaching the concepts.
- Give opportunities to work in group so that students will learn more in group interaction with sharing their ideas.
- while teaching teacher should connect the mathematics problem to real world problem.
- Give correct feedback to the assignments done by the students and make corrections related to the topics.
